Use less electricity.

Together we can harness the social energy of our community to reduce our reliance on diesel generation!

The ‘Beat the Peak’ campaign’s goal is to explore how collectively we can reduce our demand for electricity during peak times of use and lessen our dependence on rented diesel generators in the Yukon.

What’s the issue?

When the temperature drops, Yukoners will enter ‘Peak’ Season. At certain times during our colder days, our collective electricity use exceeds the amount we have available, so we end up relying on backup diesel generators, which are expensive and tough on the environment.

What Are We Doing?

When a peak event is expected, people who have signed up to our campaign will receive a notification from our system before, during, and after the ‘peak’, asking them to take action and reduce their electricity use during these times.

What Could You Do?

Have your plan ready to go. We have put together a list of suggestions that you can use to help Beat the Peak. Pick a few in advance so that when the temperature drops and the peak arrives, you will be ready to beat it!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Beat the Peak campaign is a pilot project, investigating possibilities for reducing Whitehorse’s winter peak power consumption, using low-cost, low-tech educational and engagement strategies.

  • This campaign is a joint effort, led by the Northern Energy Innovation research team at Yukon University, and supported by Yukon Energy Corporation, Yukon Conservation Society, The City Of Whitehorse, ATCO Electric Yukon and Yukon Government.

  • If this campaign is successful, we will be able to refine it in future years and present a ‘beat the peak’ program to Yukon Energy as an alternative to hiring additional diesel generators to meet peak demand.

  • The peak notification system is designed to ensure that participants save energy when it matters most and allows us to coordinate our efforts for optimal success. The system will send out notifications to participants before a peak, during the peak, and after the peak, thanking them for their engagement. The system will only target three winter peaks throughout the winter.

  • Signing up for the Peak Notification System is completely voluntary, however, these programs have had proven success for reducing peak demand in other parts of Canada. Your email/phone number will only be used for the purpose of sending messages before, during, and after peak events, in addition to a voluntary survey at the end of the campaign. Aside from sending the notifications mentioned above, your email and phone number will not be used for any other purpose.

  • If you have a question about the campaign’s design, it’s goals, etc, the best people to contact would be the campaign’s research team at YukonU. Send them an email at BeatThePeak@YukonU.ca

  • This will be our second year running the Beat the Peak campaign. For information about how things went during our first year, you can download our report here.
